An essential work of musical modernity and one of the most emblematic of the 20th century, Wozzeck is a flash. By adapting Georg Büchner's play, Alban Berg succeeded in capturing the social and psychological violence crushing soldier Franz Wozzeck, with an accuracy and force rarely achieved in opera. Submissive to the captain, abused by the doctor, deceived by Marie, the character of Wozzeck leads us to think about madness in what is most tragic for the lonely individual as well as for the collective. An expressionist universe that merges with an equally glaring evidence in the staging of William Kentridge, a major visual artist on the contemporary scene. His drawings and videos appear to us as projections of Wozzeck's imagination, exposing the horror of the First World War.
