In the season of 22/23, Matthew made his Debut, in two concert productions, with the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège, Belgium. In addition to this, he returns for concerts with Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, Gävle Symphony Orchestra, The Orchestra of Norrlands Opera, and Västersås Sinfonietta. In April 2023, Matthew was invited to join the talent development programme of Symfonie Orkest Vlaanderen, Belgium, mentored by Chief conductor, Kristiina Poska. In the Autumn of 2023, Matthew will make his professional operatic debut with a production of Strauss’ ‘Die Fledermaus’ with Sweden’s Vattnäs Konsertlada.
Furthermore, Matthew was recently the youngest semi-finalist of the 2023 ‘Donatella Flick Conducting Competition’ in which he worked with the London Symphony Orchestra, and has been selected as a competitor at the 2023 Mahler Competition, with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra.
Highlights of previous seasons include two chamber Opera productions with the Swedish Royal Academy of Music to celebrate their 250th anniversary year, a performance of Alban Berg’s Chamber Concerto for Piano, Violin and 13 winds with the Sibelius Academy Chamber Orchestra, and a number of engagements with MAV Symphony Orchestra - Budapest
(Mendelssohn Symphony 4, Brahms Symphony 3). In August 2022, Matthew was personally invited by Jukka-Pekka Saraste to conduct in the Fiskars Summer Festival (Finland) alongside conductors such as, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Hannu Lintu, and Dalia Stasevska.
Matthew began his conducting studies at the age of 16 at the Junior college of the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, UK, under the instruction of the Polish conductor Ewa Strusinska. During his time at the JRNCM, Matthew founded the JRNCM Sinfonia which gave 2 highly successful concerts, the last one in June 2018 which focused on music inspired by Scotland, and included Mendelssohn’s ‘Scottish’ Symphony, and Bruch’s ‘Scottish’ Fantasy.
Over the past few years, Matthew has taken numerous workshops with Michael Tilson-Thomas, Stéphane Denève, Jorma Panula, David Zinman, Johannes Schlaefli, Bjarte Engeset, Gerard Korsten, and Sian Edwards. In March 2020, Matthew was invited to take part in the Critical Orchestra program, organized by the Dirigentenforum and led by Simone Young (conductor) and Lothar Strauss (Concertmaster of Staatskapelle Berlin). He has also assisted Simone Young during her Guest conducting engagement with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra in February 2020 and again during her visit to the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in October 2021.
